You don’t have to walk alone: #CompanionChampions connect vulnerable neighbours with community members who want to help

Written by #TeamNextdoor

For many of us, the last 16 months have been incredibly challenging. Neighbours have experienced increased isolation and loneliness as a result of Covid-19, while others have faced discrimination and fear, particularly after the heinous terror attack in London, Ontario, leaving some afraid to go out for a walk.

If you’re feeling vulnerable, afraid or isolated, you are not alone.

Nextdoor has partnered with a group of concerned community members, the same community members behind the recent Conquer Covid-19 movement, to connect people feeling isolated, afraid or vulnerable with those in the neighbourhood who want to help by going for a walk together.

To find someone to walk with or to offer to walk, post on Nextdoor using the #CompanionChampions hashtag or mark yourself as looking for someone to walk with on the Help Map. You can also visit www.companionchampions.ca/

All neighbours deserve to feel safe in their community. Walking with your neighbours is a great way to meet new people, get out and move and build meaningful connections. In fact, a recent Nextdoor study revealed knowing as few as six neighbours reduces the likelihood of feeling lonely and is linked to lowering depression and social anxiety related to COVID-19.

In partnership with neighbours across Canada we look forward to walking our way to strong community connections while combating isolation and fear in our neighbourhoods.
